Metrix was founded over 30 years ago in Toronto, Canada, by partners Susan Caldwell and Christine Pylat. They saw an opportunity to create a new kind of training design agency that created exceptional content with a relentless focus on results. The company was named Metrix because it always includes metrics into its learning designs. Jessica Knox, its current CEO, has worked at Metrix for over ten years and took ownership of the company last year.
Jessica attended the WEConnect International Canada Conference last year and, in her own words, "appreciated the sense of community and the structured introductions to companies who were looking to expand their supplier diversity." There, she met the Johnson & Johnson's procurement team. They were already doing some work with Janssen, and that helped build credibility. They also have a lot of experience working in pharma as well as capability in medical writing, which fits well with their expressed needs.
"Since our inception, Metrix has been working in what I consider the most positive side of HR. We aim to help people gain the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the workplace. We work hard to do it in a way where employees enjoy their training and, if we are lucky, are inspired to continue learning. The skills gained often transcend a specific role and help people throughout their careers. I also believe that we have a responsibility to help support our local community's general well-being and global access to education.
Several years ago, I participated in SheEO, an incubator for women-owned businesses. We spent a lot of time gaining clarity on many levels, and it was only looking back that I saw the value of those exercises. The takeaway for me was that it's important, especially as a female business owner, to know what you want for your company, your team, and yourself with total clarity. Resist the urge to adhere to 'shoulds.' From there, you have to work towards that vision with total confidence and trust in yourself," she states.
Metrix believes the world is in the middle of a quiet revolution in workplace learning, and COVID-19 is accelerating everything. The learning function's role is changing from primarily buying or designing "training programs" to creating an environment through culture, curation, targeted design, and technology that supports quicker, more responsive upskilling and reskilling of their workforces.
"We continue to identify new ways to work with our Canadian contacts and Nicole at Johnson & Johnson has offered to share our story and services with the global J&J procurement team.
